A rescue helicopter joins the search over the River Don at Kintore yesterday

Sandy Henderson (who was in his early 80s) is missing, believed drowned, following the accident yesterday morning (Thursday, October 22) when his tractor was washed away. The retired farmer was trying to rescue cattle stranded on the flood plain by rising water when the accident happened.

A massive search involving police, underwater search teams, coastguard,, fire and rescue services and an RAF rescue helicopter swung into action when the alarm was raised at 08.35. The search was called off after almost seven hours due to the danger to emergency services’ personnel due to rising floodwaters.

There is a deep sense of shock in Kintore. Mr Henderson was well known in the area and his family say that the accident happened as he tried to rescue cattle in a field which he leased to another farmer.

Our deepest sympathy goes out to Mr Henderson’s family. We hope that the knowledge that their grief is shared in some small way by the people of Kintore, may provide some comfort at this tragic time.

FOOTNOTE: Sandy’s body was recovered from the river on Friday (October 23).
