Can you help Rachel's work in Embu?

For most of the year Rachel Lewis – our current ‘Citizen of the Year’ in Kintore – works as the Youth and Volunteer co-ordinator with Kintore’s community charity Action Kintore.

But, it is a testament to Rachel’s love for working with young people at The Bothie, that – when summer holidays beckon – Rachel flies out to Kenya to work with young people in the village of Embu. That’s Rachel in the middle of the picture below.

“At the end of June, I will be going with a group of people to partake in numerous projects to work with and help the local people,” Rachel explains.

“We also have plans to go south and spend two days in Mwingi to help and support the local schools by donating books, jotters, pens and pencils. During my trip in 2017, I used the money I received from the Funds4U grant to buy jotters, writing utensils and two large bags of raise and beans for a disadvantaged school in Mwingi.”

On previous trips Rachel and her colleagues have found themselves involved in a wide range of activities to support the community. They have painted classrooms and taken supplies to the local hospital and orphanages. They have also worked closely with Embu Rotary to buy and deliver sanitary packs, bought from Freedom4 girls, to give and educate the girls in local schools outside Embu.

The group will also be working with local craft and knitting groups to make blankets and hats so they can give them to the orphans and the local hospital.

“In total we will be working with and visiting 11 schools, two orphanages and a hospital,” says Rachel.

“Between now and June, my team and I will be organising fundraising events to try to raise enough money and equipment and pay for its shipment to Nairobi, in time for our arrival at the end of June.

Can you help Rachel and her team to support the young people of Embu and Mwingi this summer?
