Changes in The Square

Good to see improvements taking place in The Square, which will hopefully restore some of its prestige as the centre of our town.
Work has started on renovating the fountain in front of the Town House. Kintore and District Community Council have been working hard with Aberdeenshire Council. The fountain has not operated for some years after instances of vandalism. But it is currently fenced off for a few days for repointing work. This will be followed by a water-tightness test. The aim is to see the fountain functioning again during summer months.
"The fountain occupies a prominent position in The Square in Kintore and forms part of the setting for the nearby historic buildings,” explains East Garioch councillor Martin Ford. “Both in Aberdeenshire Council and at the community council, discussions have been on-going for some time about bringing the fountain back into use.
"There are issues about how to repair the damaged top of the fountain in a way that makes it less susceptible to damage in the future, has an acceptable appearance and still allows the fountain to work. Also, if the fountain does operate, there will be some on-going running costs relating to keeping the water clean and safe.
"In principle, though, the view expressed at the community council and elsewhere is that the fountain should be put back into operation. The three local Aberdeenshire councillors have all voiced their support for getting the fountain repaired."
Meanwhile, work to re-open the Kintore Arms as a restaurant, cafe and bar, has started as you can see in the photo below.
The Square, dominated by our 18th century Town House with its prominent stairs to the council chamber, is Kintore’s jewel in the crown.
With plans to improve the setting of the Town House and plans to make better use of the building for the community and visitors, these are exciting times for Kintore.
