Gauch Hill Woodland Questionnaire

Following the success of previous Wood In and Around Towns, WIAT projects, Aberdeenshire Council is developing a series of management plans for Council owned woods across Aberdeenshire.

Gauch Hill Woodland, highlighted in red, is one of six Council owned woodlands included in this process during 2009.

The aim of the management plan is to:

  • List the features of the woodland
    • Identify the management objectives for the wood
    • Set priorities for action over the next five years

The following four themes and associated draft work programme have been identified as priorities for management of these woodlands:
  • Undertake appropriate silvicultural management:
    • e.g. thinning of trees to allow the remaining trees to develop; felling of dead & damaged trees adjacent to footpath; planting of trees & shrubs in the open spaces created by felling.
    • Maintain & enhance biodiversity:
    • e.g. improve habitat for red squirrels; removal of invasive non-native species such as beech seedlings.
    • Maintain & enhance woodland infrastructure:
    • e.g. review condition of footpaths, seats and signage.
    • Encourage & develop community involvement:
    • e.g. increase local awareness of the wood & its value.

Aberdeenshire Council would like to hear your views on the woodland to help inform and identify priorities for management as well as the resources required over the next 5 years.

Please
