...Members of AK Ltd., the Youth Forum and youth workers from the Community Learning Dept. visited various locations and considered various building options, including a log cabin and a portacabin, but an eco-conscious straw bale structure seen while under construction at Whitehouse, Aberdeenshire made an immediate impact and it became the focus of all efforts thereafter.

...This is an exciting project and ticks so many boxes relative to youth and the community and in addition, the building design, with straw bales in the walls, a living sedum roof and old tyres used in the foundations is not only unique (it is highly unlikely there is another Youth Centre of this kind in the UK), but also eco-conscious.

...This was a terrific day, and although numbers attending were a bit disappointing, that was more than made up for by the very positive feeling of community spirit; valuable awareness raising of the Café and a total of £650.00 being raised.

...Our next meeting on the 22th September will be to celebrate the good news re. planning; talk about another fundraising event – a Race Night at The Hopeville Club, Inverurie, on the 30th October which is mainly being organised by Balfour Beatty with support from the Forum; and making up an Information Board for the Forum which they can display at future events.

Action Kintore and the Community Council lobbied Aberdeenshire Council hard for the former Library site to become the site for a community youth facility and to the Council’s credit, they have recently agreed to support that.

...Thanks to the meeting in March, we are not short of ideas but without more helpers from the local community, it will not be possible to deliver the activities that were identified as wanted in Kintore.

Somewhere to 'hang out' with friends was one of the main requests in a survey of Kintore youngsters conducted by the community council and it also cropped up as one of the main themes at the following Action Kintore public meeting.

..."The only caveat was that, whilst supporting the Youth Cafe and Car park option, they feel there should be a survey of the site carried out, to fully ascertain if there could be better use made of it, for the benefit of Kintore," explains Kenny Thomson, of the Action Kintore sub group.

...Publicity for the event included the compilation and distribution of over 1000 flyers to every house in Kintore, the display of posters in prominent positions in the town centre, media publicity which included an interview by Ken White on Northsound Radio and interaction with young people on the streets, in an attempt to have a good turnout of young people at the Meeting.

...However, Action Kintore is of the view that it was not all about young people, as older generations needed to know that something was being done, to address the challenges of lack of youth facilities and antisocial behaviour, by people who are fit and capable of doing so and now that older people have been updated, the focus can be on resolving some of the issues.

Things I like/dislike about Kintore

Note also that some people posted conditional comments in this area eg. it used to be small, it had a village atmosphere, and I have put these at the end of the list.

Young residents made up almost a quarter of the audience, and they were eager to share their views on the facilities and recreational activities they would like to have in the town.

...The organisers are under no illusions as to the challenges ahead, but feel that a good and positive start has been made in getting everyone together to address the related issues of lack of recreational facilities and outbreaks of antisocial behaviour.
